Greetings. I am going to continue in the edition with the concept of creating and using a master image. As I said in my last newsletter master images are generally high resolution files such as tiff files or psd files that can be changed and saved without file degradation and loss of quality. As an artist is really isn't too important to know the mechanics of the two file types but there are some considerations to both. Both tiff files and psd files are capable of saving with multiple layers and both files contain an extremely large amount of image data with no compression. You can save a tiff file with compression but I usually don't recommend it. The tiff file is a little more portable since it is a cross platform file format which means it can be edited by a multitude of software programs and can be used on Mac or PC. The psd file can also be utilized on Mac or PC but it only be opened and edited in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. This generally does not pose a problem since most people in the image industry are using Photoshop.

Regardless of which file format you choose, once you make the modifications to your image and are satisfied with it, save the master file to a directory that is easy to access. From that image you can make reference prints, resize it for use on your website or for attaching it to an email. You could also use it if you are doing magazine advertising or if you have any media requests. When resizing etc you will want to select save as to create the different files from your master image. This way your master image remains unchanged. Again I appreciate your interest in digital image and hope you have a great day!
